Gakobwa – La petite fille – Small girl
A few months back, by chance or destiny, I met an old lady in Buhiga, a village in Karuzi province, central Burundi. Her name is Gakobwa, which means “small girl” in Kirundi. Gakobwa’s height is about 1,40m.
When I asked the lady her age she answered: “I don’t know, but it must be somewhere in the centuries”. The old woman is supposed to be yet another sad story from “Africa”. Gakobwa has lost four children, was widowed more than a decade ago, was accused to be a witch by some in the village, and has suffered from leprosy, TB and Malaria repetitively.
Yet, I believe that the “small girl” is a fundamental human success story. One to be admired, to be told. Look into her face and you will see that she is filled with resilience, wittiness, humour, and wisdom. In midday sun or darkness, she walks around at a pace that is difficult to match. She sees the rain falling before it does. She has a friendly word for anyone who crosses her path, has breakfast at the police station. She knows what to get where and who to ask.
And if for a change she doesn’t, she just tries– and gets there. Life in dignity at an old age: Gakobwa.
